'Anonymous' threats against MP Toews an RCMP matter

A parliamentary committee tasked with investigating Internet threats made against Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says it's up to the RCMP to track the culprits.

The committee issued its report Wednesday after ...... several hearings looking at Internet threats and specifically, YouTube videos posted by someone purporting to be part of the hacker group Anonymous.

The committee concluded the videos breached Toews's privilege by threatening to expose secrets about him and his family if he didn't resign and withdraw legislation.

"At this time, the committee feels it is preferable to let the RCMP continue its investigation into the matter, while also remaining open to reconsideration of the issue should further developments arise, including the completion of the investigation," the report says.

The threats against Toews, Manitoba's senior cabinet minister, came after he introduced Bill C-30, which gives the federal government more power to get personal information about Internet users from Internet service providers without having to get a warrant. A backlash against the bill -- which critics have dubbed the Internet spying bill -- included verbal and Internet attacks on Toews.

The government has shelved the bill for now.
